Beach on St Lucia The Caribbean islands or West Indies lie in a sweeping arc stretching from Florida to the northern coast of South America. They vary in size from 44,178 square miles (Cuba) to small islets of just a few acres. They form a breakwater 3200 kilometres long between the Atlantic Ocean to the north and east and the Caribbean Sea to the south and west. There are two main chains: the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic and Haiti, Puerto Rico and the British and US Virgin Islands) and the Lesser Antilles - subdivided into the Leeward Islands (Anguilla, St Martin/St Maarten, St Barts, Saba, St Eustatius, St Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat and Guadeloupe) and Windward Islands (Dominica, Martinique, St Lucia, Barbados, St Vincent, the Grenadines, and Grenada).
