What's New in Grenada in 2003![]() St. George's, Grenada, March 5, 2003 - Grenada is currently experiencing many exciting developments that are expected to positively affect the country's tourism industry in 2003 and beyond. Visitors are sure to benefit from the following transformations taking place in the areas of transportation, accommodations and attractions: NEW AIRLIFTOn December 21st, 2002, US Airways began weekly non-stop service to Grenada via its Philadelphia, PA hub. The Saturday flights depart Philadelphia at 9:45 a.m. and arrive in Grenada at 3:38 p.m. The return Saturday service departs Grenada at 4:40 p.m. and arrives in Philadelphia at 8:32 p.m. NEW CRUISE SHIP PORTOn December 12, 2002, an official ceremony to mark the launching of a new multi-million dollar deep-water cruise ship port on the western side of the capital city of St. George's took place. Plans call for the construction of two berths totaling 1,968 feet, which will take place along with the building of a visitor reception area, a small marina to accommodate excursion boats and yachts, duty free shops, restaurants and offices. A parking facility and a recently completed bus station have already been built to provide passengers with convenient transportation options upon disembarkation. A queuing area for 100 taxis and mini-buses is also planned. NEW HOTELS* Bel Air Plantation Resort will open on the southeast coast of Grenada this spring. The 18-acre oceanfront resort will open in two phases. In its first phase, the resort will offer 11 one and two bedroom villas and cottages, two restaurants, a fruit orchard, a vegetable, herb and butterfly garden and an aviary. When the second phase is completed in 2004, there will be a total of 24 villas, a shopping complex, art gallery, three pools and a four-acre park featuring butterfly and bird aviaries. * In late October 2002, construction began on Grenada's newest business traveler-focused property. The South City Plaza Hotel will be located near to Grenada's world-class Grand Anse Beach and is expected to be complete in October or November of 2003. The property will feature 24 executive suites, all of which will be equipped with personal computers and Internet service. The resort will also include a state-of-the-art convention center, six restaurants, a full-service fitness center and 15 duty free retail shops. In addition, offices will be available for lease. * The only exclusively Vegetarian/Vegan establishment in Grenada or the West Indies, The Lodge will be open for business beginning this month. The Lodge offers two double rooms with full board and accommodation. Surrounded by sea, mountains and rainforest The Lodge, an old Plantation house, was built in the late 1800's and is set in 2½ acres of grounds overlooking St. George's. NEW EVENTA brand new entertainment festival is being introduced to Grenada's calendar of events this year. The Spice Laugh Festival, slated for April 11th - 13th, 2003, will cater to families and include comedy, story-telling, inland tours, children's games, riverside expeditions, folklore, fun sports, local food and cultural shows by local and regional artists. NEW ATTRACTIONDating back to the 17th century, the historic Belmont Estate, located in the parish of St. Patrick, is now welcoming visitors to tour and witness a traditional plantation at work. Here, visitors will experience the heritage museum, cocoa fermentary, cultural activities like stick fighting, nation drumming, traditional games and bele and pique dancing, a sugarcane garden and a cemetery that dates back to 1780. The estate also features an indoor and outdoor dining facility that serves up a scrumptious plantation-style buffet lunch. GOLF COURSE/LEVERA BEACH RESORT PROJECT UPDATEThe first nine holes of Grenada's first ever 18-hole world-class championship golf course are complete. Phase I construction of the Golf Course Club House is currently underway. The course is anticipated to be ready for play in the third quarter of this year. The course is part of the larger Levera Beach Resort Project, which is currently under development on the northern side of the island and will ultimately include a 600-unit major chain hotel, 200 resort residential villas, casino, boutique shops and commercial retail center, wedding chapel, emergency medical center and environmental preserve. Model villas are currently under development and reservations for model sales will be available by the second quarter of the year. HOTEL EXPANSIONSLa Sagesse Nature Centre recently reopened its doors in early December after completing an ambitious renovation project. The new renovations include a newly erected building that houses five new rooms - - three oceanfront, including one suite, and two tree house - - and a new restaurant and bar, located adjacent to the beach, which features intimate dining alongside the natural beauty of La Sagesse Bay. True Blue Bay Resort & Marina will add five new two-bedroom cottages to the west of the resort this summer. These new units will have private balconies, patios and their own plunge pools. Planned completion is for Christmas 2003. A new infinity pool by the water's edge is also currently being developed. This project should be finished by early summer. RESTAURANT UPDATESLast year, two of Grenada's finest dining establishments, Rudolf's and Brown Sugar, experienced devastating fires that put them out of business. Rudolf's is currently operating at the Cinnamon Hill Hotel and is aiming at being back in full business this July, while Brown Sugar has recently reopened at a new site close to their original location at Grand Anse.
