The Caribbean islands or West Indies lie in a sweeping arc stretching from Florida
to the northern coast of South America. They vary in size from 44,178 square miles (Cuba) to
small islets of just a few acres.
They form a breakwater 3200 kilometres long between the Atlantic
Ocean to the north and east and the Caribbean Sea to the south and west. There are two main chains: the Greater Antilles (Cuba,
, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic and Haiti, Puerto Rico and the British and US
Virgin Islands) and the Lesser Antilles - subdivided into the Leeward Islands (Anguilla, ,
