"From shipwrecks and dump trucks to dramatic walls and a cruise ship pier, St. Croix has many diverse dive sites to explore," says Sid Kalmans, owner of Hotel Caravelle, who was a certified SCUBA instructor when he moved to St. Croix in 1983, "A favorite is the canyon at Salt River, a site where in 1493 Christopher Columbus landed and where in the 1980's the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had an underwater lab where scientists studied the ocean for weeks at a time, sleeping and eating in this habitat under the sea. The ocean life and dramatic views are stunning and ever changing."
