Australia

Australia is both an island and a continent. Its western shores face the Indian Ocean, the eastern coast of the country is washed by the Pacific. South of Australia lie the icy seas leading to Antarctica while the nearest neighbours to the north include the islands states of Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea

Australia was settled by aboriginal people tens of thousands of years ago. They followed the chain of islands leading from the Asian mainland. European settlement began in the eighteenth century with the planting of the British flag. Today, it is an increasingly multicultural continent mingling dozens of different cultures to form a distinctively Australian way of life.
