Far off in sunlit places : stories of the Scots in Australia and New Zealand

by Jim Hewitson
Jim Hewitson creates affectionate pen-portraits of a gallery of Scots immigrants to Australia and New Zealand from 1788 up to World War II. He tells stories of determination, of quiet bravery, of bold enterprise and of homesickness - stories of people with the steel of a Caledonian heritage in their souls. Focusing on themes such as emigration, arrival, exploration, farming and relations with indigenous people, the book also features over a hundred fascinating historical illustrations. Hewitson's delightfully readable collection of colourful anecdotes, remarkable family histories, and tales of fortune and misfortune will intrigue all Australians and New Zealanders of Scottish descent.

Australia's Best Hotel

Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide Wins National Tourism Award

April 12, 2004 -- RADISSON - The Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide has been selected as Australia’s best hotel, winning the Australian Tourism Award 2003-04 for the best luxury accommodation in Australia.

The award was given in February and follows the hotel’s induction into the South Australian Tourism Commission’s Hall of Fame in December 2003 after winning the Luxury Accommodation section in the State awards for the third consecutive year.

The Managing Director of the Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide, Mr Bill Sparr, said that winning the national award in a field including such fantastic properties such as the Palazzo Versace in Queensland, the Crown Towers in Victoria, the Burswood International Resort Casino in Western Australia and the Westin Sydney had been an incredible achievement.

The hotel was built and positioned as a unique boutique property with a focus on service, premium balanced and interactive facilities and cutting edge food. We have given our all to achieve excellence not only on the big issues but equally on the small ones. We understand that success is a moment to moment challenge and this recognition has rejuvenated the whole team and rekindled our obsession to improve.

"It is a vote of confidence in the way we go about our business as well as recognition for South Australia, which has proved it can mix it with the best when it comes to tourism product standards".

"Guests can look forward to another round of improvements this year as we seek higher standards, improved facilities and further points of differentiation".

In accepting the Australian Tourism Award in Perth last week, the Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide's Director of Sales, Ms Catherine Byrne, said the efforts of staff had been crucial in achieving the service standards, which underpinned the award.

"Everyone working at the hotel has embraced the need to provide the best possible service to ensure that all guests staying with us have a pleasurable and memorable experience," she said.

The Australian Tourism Award win is the latest in a string of national and international awards the Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide has achieved.

In October last year the hotel won two Australasian Bridal Association Awards for the Best Hotel Reception Venue and the Best First Night Honeymoon Accommodation Venue.

Earlier in the year, the Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide won the Australian Hotels Association State awards for Best Superior Restaurant and Best Marketed Hotel and the Meeting Industry Association of Australia’s Best Meeting Venue for less than 500 delegates.

The Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide was the first boutique five-star hotel attached to an international chain to be developed in Adelaide.

Its stylish Victorian architecture, art nouveau ground floor interiors, advanced technology and facilities combine with a unique range of accommodation including 'New York' style loft suites and studio rooms, all with private balconies and kitchenettes and personal entertainment facilities.

"As a five-star boutique hotel, the Radisson Playford Hotel & Suites Adelaide provides a distinctive, world-class tourism and hospitality experience unique to Australia," Mr Sparr said.
